In the 1990's a handful of motorcycle enthusiasts from various communities in north Florida began riding together. A strong sense of camaraderie soon developed within the group as they learned to rely on each other on and off the road. They also learned that anyone that couldn't be relied upon wasn't worth inviting into the group. The strong personal bonds and sense of family that defines a group of brothers soon resulted. This tightly knit brotherhood formed the nucleus that would eventually become the Southern Sons Motorcycle Club. The group would gather in the garages or under a tree in backyards of different members to hang out and then enjoy a Sunday afternoon ride. After the ride, the group usually cooked out and made plan runs to future motorcycle events. As the Sunday gatherings became a regular event, friends and acquaintances were invited to join the Sunday rides and cookouts. By the late 1990's the group soon became too large to hang out in garages and leased an old building in Trenton, Florida. Having formerly been used as a bar & grill, the building had been vacant for over 3 years and had fallen into disrepair. Through the generosity and hard work of club members, family, friends and other area clubs, the "clubhouse" was soon up and running. The joy would be short lived. The club lost two brothers, in separate incidents, to careless drivers within one year. However tragic, the loss reminded the group that life is fragile and the time we are granted to share with our brothers is brief. The members grew even closer. In spite of the loss, the club continued to grow. By this time the effects of the structural damage that the clubhouse had sustained during the years of standing vacant became more evident. As a result of safety concerns and an inability to come to terms with the building owner over repairs, the clubhouse was closed. While the brotherhood that makes up the Southern Sons Motorcycle Club has grown in size and diversity over the years, the same values and principles upon which the club was founded, and enabled it to overcome adversity, ring true to this day. The Southern Sons Motorcycle Club continues to foster brotherhood and loyalty, by promoting the true understanding of the biker lifestyle and the true meaning of "heart" |
